Frequently Asked Questions

Is General Finishes Lamp Black a true milk paint?

No. It is not a powdered, casein-based milk paint. It is a premixed, modern water-based acrylic paint named for its low-luster sheen.

What shade of black is this?

This is Lamp Black, a deep, classic black that suits modern, farmhouse, and traditional pieces. Browse more colors in our wood stains & finishes collection.

Do I need to apply a topcoat?

No. The paint is durable on its own. Use a clear topcoat finish only if you want added sheen or extra protection.

How many coats should I plan for?

Apply 2 or more coats for a deep, even black. The paint dries rapidly and resists blocking between coats.

How is it applied?

It is designed for brush application. Quality brushes from our finishing supplies help avoid brush marks on dark colors.

Can Lamp Black be used outside?

Yes. Milk Paint is UV resistant and rated for both interior and exterior use.

What sheen does it dry to?

It dries to a flat, low-luster sheen. To boost the gloss, add a topcoat finish.

Is this paint chip resistant?

Yes. It is a furniture-grade, chip-resistant finish made to be tough and durable on furniture and cabinetry.

Can I sand it between coats?

Yes. The formulation sands easily, letting you smooth the surface with fine sanding & abrasives between coats.

Who makes this paint?

It is made by General Finishes. See more of their finishes in our stains & finishes collection.
